Cherry plum

Cherry plum or splayed plum - this fruit plant belongs to the subfamily Plum from the Pink family. The multi-stemmed trees, covered with thorny branches, reach a height of 3-10 m. The leaves, slightly pointed towards the top, have an elliptical shape. Flowers of white or pink shade begin to bloom from the second half of March. From June to September, juicy round-shaped fruits appear on the tree. There is a small bone inside the fruit. Depending on the type of drupe, they can be pink, yellow, red or purple. Cherry plum has a very powerful root system that can go to a depth of 2 meters. You can grow a plant on any type of soil.

Care features

After a snowy winter, small grooves are made around the cherry plum so that moisture does not stagnate. All dead bark is removed, and the damaged areas are washed with a solution of copper sulfate. Then the dried and damaged branches are removed, the soil around the tree is carefully dug up and fed with nitrogen fertilizers. If root growth has formed, then it is removed.
If the winter turned out to be with little snow, then in the spring the cherry plum is watered abundantly to stimulate the formation of buds. When buds are formed, the tree is sprayed with a solution of trace elements. In May, the plant must be fed with mineral fertilizers.

Mobirise

In summer cherry plum is watered abundantly. After each watering, the soil around the tree is loosened and weeds are removed. It is important to note that mature trees need less moisture than young trees.

A month after the first spraying, cherry plum is re-treated with a mixture of trace elements, phosphorus and potassium.

In August, the plant needs very abundant watering so that the water moisturizes the entire root system. Cherry plum is also fed with organic fertilizers (mullein or bird droppings). This is due to the fact that during this period the tree actively nourishes the ripening fruits.

After harvesting, organic and mineral fertilizers are applied to the soil under the tree. Then the cherry plum is watered abundantly so that the soil is wet at least half a meter. After that, you can start harvesting seedlings.

Before winter, all dead bark particles are removed from the cherry plum, and the stem and the base of large branches are whitewashed with lime. Then they cut off all the root growth and remove it from the site along with the fallen leaves.
For the prevention of diseases and protection from pests, cherry plum in April is treated with a solution of copper and iron sulfate. But this must be done even before the active formation of the kidneys begins. A similar treatment is repeated in the fall after all the leaves have fallen off.

Planting / transplanting, reproduction

Planting time for cherry plum depends on the climatic conditions of the region. In places with little snow and mild winters, seedlings are planted in open ground in the fall. In areas with cold and snowy winters, it is recommended to plant cherry plum in spring. Annual seedlings are best suited for planting.

A well-lit area is chosen for cherry plum, which will be protected from strong gusts of wind. It is recommended to plant a tree on the south side of various buildings. This will have a positive effect on the yield.

For autumn planting, pits are prepared in a week or two. They should be up to a meter in diameter and up to half a meter deep, and the distance between the holes should be at least two meters. More than half of each hole is filled with a mixture of soil, humus and nitrophosphate. The rest of the additives depend on the type of soil. Lime is added to acidic soil, gypsum is added to alkaline soil, turfy soil is added to sandy soil, and a mixture of peat and sand is added to clayey soil.
Small mounds are made at the bottom of the holes. Before planting, the root system of seedlings is placed in a clay mash with a root formation stimulator. Then the seedlings are moved into the holes and the roots are carefully straightened. Top up with soil, watered abundantly and mulched after absorbing moisture.
